Sutro Baths: A very large turn of the century American poster for the Sutro Baths, San Francisco. The baths, which opened March 14, 1896, were the extravagant undertaking of Adolphe Sutro, German immigrant and self made millionaire, who was then mayor of San Francisco. The facility housed six saltwater and one freshwater pool, along with an amphitheater, museum, skating rink and over 500 dressing rooms. The venture struggled financially due to high operating costs; shortly after closing, a fire in 1966 destroyed the facility. The ruins still exist.
