Georges Hoentschel Hazel Leaf Urn: A monumental French art nouveau period stoneware urn by Georges Hoentschel (1855 - 1915.)

Trained as an architect, Hoentschel gained prominence at the turn of the century for his work in design, both interiors and ceramics. His fascination with the natural world during the art nouveau period is evident in this design. Hazelnuts and leaves are modeled in relief throughout, with brown/green glazes reinforcing the "forest" theme. This is amongst the largest and most ambitious ceramics designed by the artist. Hoentschel monogram on base.

Reference: "Hoentschel," by Nicole Hoentschel, p. 104. Hoentschel's personal trove of decorative arts was purchased in 1906 by J.P Morgan and later donated, in part, to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
