French born Gromaire (1892-1971) was a painter and printmaker known for the rich textural quality of his works. He briefly relocated to the United States, where he received the coveted Carnegie Prize in 1952. In France, he was made commander of the Legion d'Honneur and received the Grand Prix National des Arts in 1958.
