6 Piece Desk Set: Elegant ten-piece bronze "celtic knot" design desk set manufactured by Marshall Field's, Chicago IL, early 20th century. Set consists of inkwell, two boxes, letter or matchbook holder, letter opener, blotter, and four blotter corners. Glass "self closing" inkwell insert, manufactured by Sengbusch, Milwaukee WI, is intact. Lid of inkwell marked "Made in Our Craft Shop Marshall Field & Co."
Marshall Field's opened the fully equipped Marshall Field & Co. Craft Shop and Metal Foundry, circa 1904. Capitalizing on the Arts and Crafts movement, they made hand-wrought and machine made jewelry and household items until they closed in 1950.
Dimensions: Inkwell is 4 1/2" H x 5" D, larger box is 1 3/4" H x 6 3/4" W x 4" D, smaller box is 2" H x 4" W x 3" D, match holder is 3 3/4" H x 4 1/2" W x 4 1/2" D, blotter is 1 1/2" H x 6" W x 3" D. Letter opener is 10 1/4" in length. Dimensions below are for larger box only.
