Earthenware Bowl: A French art deco period glazed earthenware bowl by Paul Ami Bonifas, c. 1930. Soft pastel color glaze; simple form characteristic of Bonifas. Brush signed BOAS, France.

Paul Bonifas (1893-1967) was Swiss born. He moved to Paris in 1921 and soon opened his own atelier, producing very modern forms with sculptural quality. His fame expanded after his exhibitions at the Autumn Salon of 1927 and the Art Deco Salons of 1931 as well as the Swiss Decorative Arts Guild Exhibits. He immigrated to the U.S. in the 1940s, where he became the first Director of Ceramics at The University of Washington.
